With World Chocolate Day approaching, here's how you can gift a loved one some delicious chocolates this year!

n Thursday 7th July, we get to celebrate something that can be found in most homes across the world.

Whether you keep it in the fridge, or the cupboard, everyone loves a bit of chocolate every now and then.

Not only a tasty treat, chocolates also make a great gift, and when partnered with a gorgeous bouquet of flowers from flowersbypost.com, you really can't go wrong.

So, let's take a look at what makes chocolate so special, and ask just why we all love it so much that we give it its own special day.

A History of Chocolate

Chocolate can be traced back a whopping 4000 years, when pods from the Cacao trees began to be used for consumption, probably in the form of a drink.

The founders were called the Olmecs, and they resided in Southern Mexico.

It is thought that the ceremonial drink so enjoyed by the Olmecs soon found its way to the Mayans, who lived in Central America. When they realised the wonders of this delicious bean, they didn't just eat it, but they elevated it to a position of huge importance and made sure at every important event, a form of chocolate was present.

Now, the chocolate being used back then is much different to the bars and treats we see today, but the cacao beans are just as integral.

Why is World Chocolate Day Celebrated?

Since 2009, World Chocolate Day has been held on July 7th.

Why this date?

While there are several recordings of chocolate being showcased among the European nobility years before, the love for chocolate that has lingered to this day appeared in 1550 on, you guessed it, July 7th.

What exactly occurred on this day is a bit of a mystery, but this date has found its place in history as the time the mainstream began to first realise the delights of the cacao bean.

At this time, it would have still been in the drink form as it was found in Mexico, but soon things changed.

Chocolate Today

Years after that day, the cacao beans were combined with sugar and the chocolate bar as we know it was made.

It was in the early 1900s when many of the popular bars that you still find in shops today began to be produced.

Flakes, fruit and nut bars, and crunchies were all available in shops over a century ago, and with big companies such as Cadburys and Nestle constantly trying to work out exciting new recipes and flavours, the love the UK has for the chocolate bar (we eat on average 3 a week) shows no signs of slowing down.

So how much do we love it?

Well, the average Brit eats 11kg of chocolate a year. That's a lot of chocolate.

But you may be thinking, why are flowersbypost.com writing a blog about chocolates?

Well, we sell much more than flowers. When handing over a gift to someone, what's a better addition to your bouquet than a lovely box of flowers?

Nothing, that's what!
