The Ultimate Carnation Care Guide: How to Make Them Last for Weeks

If you are looking for a flower that offers spectacular colour, a beautiful ruffled texture, and an almost unbelievable lifespan, look no further than the humble carnation. While delicate blooms like tulips or irises might fade after a few days, carnations are the undisputed endurance runners of the floral world.

Because we send our flowers safely packaged and tightly budded by post, your carnations arrive with their entire lifespan ahead of them. With just a few minutes of initial conditioning, a fresh bouquet of carnations can easily brighten your home for up to 14 to 21 days.

Follow our step-by-step expert florist guide to unlock the maximum vase life from your fresh carnations.

Step-by-Step: Waking Up Your Posted Carnations

1. Give the Stems a Strategic Trim

Grab a sharp pair of scissors or garden shears. Cut roughly 3cm off the bottom of each stem at a sharp 45-degree angle.

Florist Secret: Avoid the Nodes. If you look closely at a carnation stem, you will see small, swollen ridges called "nodes" or joints. Try to make your cut directly between two nodes rather than right through one. The stem absorbs water much more efficiently through the smooth sections than through the dense joints.

2. Strip Away Low-Hanging Leaves

Remove any green foliage that will sit below the waterline of your vase. Carnation leaves decompose quickly when submerged, creating a breeding ground for bacteria that will prematurely age your flowers.

3. Use Lukewarm Water and Flower Food

Fill a clean vase with lukewarm water and stir in your enclosed flower food packet. Lukewarm water is absorbed much faster by thirsty stems than icy cold tap water, helping your tightly closed buds open up faster.

4. The 48-Hour Water Refresh

Carnations are incredibly clean-living flowers, but they hate dirty water. To easily push their lifespan past the two-week mark, change the water completely every two to three days, giving the stems a tiny fresh trim each time.

The Secret to Reviving Thirsty Blooms

Because your flowers have travelled through the postal system, standard carnations can occasionally arrive looking tightly furled or slightly flattened by their protective packaging.

If your carnations are taking a little while to open up after 24 hours in water, you can gently encourage them. Place your thumb and forefinger at the base of the flower head (the green calyx cup) and very gently massage it. This loosens the tight petals and encourages the bloom to open up and show off its full, ruffled glory.

Where to Place Your Arrangement

Carnations are exceptionally hardy, but they will last significantly longer if kept in a cool spot away from direct afternoon sunlight, drafty hallways, or heating vents. Also, be sure to keep them clear of the kitchen fruit bowl, as ripening fruit releases gases that cause carnations to drop their petals early.
